description

At the end of 2009, graphic designer and photographer Julien Lelièvre received a research grant from the Center national des Arts Plastiques (CNAP) on the theme of “motorway art”. Two photographic series emerge: a series on works of art and a series on highways, which he calls “On the Road”. With a medium-format film camera, he produces a series of images that are different and complementary to the series of works. Having to change the shooting mode – slower and more posed – led him to have a more contemplative look at the landscape and the motorway universe. These shots were taken in another temporality, in hindsight, like a break in between. This second series became an element of rupture or transition in the series of works, it has a special status. It completes the frontal views of the works. The protocol imposed by the shooting mode reveals behind the scenes of the highway, its elements, its operation and, sometimes, the environment in which the works are placed. This series, freer, therefore has its autonomy in the project.
